I’m a participant of the FV.rb, a Ruby on Rails group of geeks who get together weekly to hang out, talk about programming, technology, hack on projects and discuss the fun of day to day life as a tech worker. The location where we are is a cool coworking space in Abbotsford, just off of the “5 corners” area. I was asked by one of the partners there to help them out with a print ad they were doing for the group, and of course I said yes!
It was a simple shoot, basically we waited until the group was there, looked at a couple of angles and then shot a few stinker photos. Matt (head honcho in charge and one half of the Switchcube team) asked if I “had an aperture camera” (more on this in a second), and luckily I did, and was able to get the image he was thinking of for the ad.
The ad came out great, I may have changed a couple of things with 20/20 hindsight, but I think it worked out well and it’s a great advertisement for the area.
Here’s the ad in it’s final form (click for full size).
Working alone does suck, and if you are looking for a place to hang your hat for the day to be around people because you’re a contractor, work for yourself, or just want to get out of the office but still have meeting rooms, phones, internet, friendly faces and a fresh pot of decent coffee (well, as long as the other partner, John Koetsier is the one who made it), you really should check out Switchcube.ca.
Photographers Only: Just to clarify about the “aperture camera”, first of all Matt is a great guy, but isn’t 100% up to speed on photography terminology. He really meant an “aperture lens”, and by that he meant a “prime lens”, and by that he really meant “I’d like a shot with a low depth of field with only hands on a keyboard in focus.” The lesson here is sometimes you need to tell your photographer what you want, not try to talk tech to them. Sometimes. I do however thank Matt (who I know was just kidding about not knowing the right terms) for the funny story to share with my photographer friends 🙂
