Sometimes in a shoot you have to take…. shall we say, “liberties” with what’s allowed and what isn’t allowed. For example, the underground shoot with Rav started in a parkade of a mall. I won’t say which mall, but I will say that just as the sun was going down and we had some gorgeous light to work with a gentleman in a truck drove up and told us that the mall was closed, what are you doing here and he was going to lock the gate in 5 minutes.
We had to rush around, pack gear up and get out of there like a group of crazy people (I’m thankful I had my buddies Shaun and Neil with me to help with the gear and packing). I don’t begrudge the guy doing his job, I sure as heck wouldn’t want to stick around work for an extra hour or two because some yahoos wanted to use my parkade. But still.
So we moved, ran over to a different mall, found a quiet section of the underground parking and quickly set up, keeping things hidden as long as possible. Of course, three cars and a group of people looking like they were trying to not be noticed are immediately noticeable, and within 5 minutes I saw a security guard walking towards us and our pile of lights and stands.
Luckily, Amrit was awesome. A part time model himself, he was completely cool with us using that corner of the underground as long as we didn’t mess things up. Offering to take a few shots of him with the same setup probably helped a bit too.
