Remember in the last post how I said I’d been wanting to make photos of dancers for years? Well, just about the time that I set up the shoot at the FVAD, I also contacted Suzy, who was a friend of a friend, who was also a ballerina, and I set up and shot with her the day before the FVAD shoot. It was a weekend of ballet!
Suzy was a blast. She’s been a dancer all her life and is now setting up a ballet school in downtown Vancouver. Suzy brought along her friend Andrea who did hair and makeup, and my sister-in-arms was the amazing Cynthia Haynes, doing more great intentional motion shots (way better than mine that’s for sure).
Shooting on the top of her apartment building in downtown Vancouver and in the dance studio she teaches in was very different. On the roof there was an amazing view, but photography wise the lighting was challenging. It wasn’t direct sunlight, but it was pretty light out, which made controlling the light fairly challenging. What you don’t see in the outdoors photos is just out of the frame is either Cynthia or Andrea with a hand on a flash and softbox providing a bit of light to shape Suzy. It was a bit windy, so I was a bit paranoid about the lights flying off the roof!
It was amazing to shoot with Suzy, though I knew I use that adjective a lot. If you’re interested in Ballet for yourself or your kids, definitely give her a shout at the contact info below:
